This book is part of the genre biography. It is biographical because it is about the real life of Sojourner Truth. This book presents facts about her life. This book is great because it offers great truth but it also engages the reader with the vibrant colors and simple yet informational text.
The illustrator of this book is Natascha Alex Blanks. She does a great job at capturing the emotions of the text. The illustrations are very detailed and enhance the text. Natascha Alex Blanks has also illustrated Vietnam Abc's: A Book about the People and Places of Vietnam.
I would have my students write about what they would do if they were a slave and how they would feel when they heard of Sojourney Truth.

I think this is a great story to read to students. It’s a story about hardships, but also triumph. I think it would be great to read to students and give them a brief description of what the united states use to be like. An activity that would be good is to have students find another historical figure in history. After they pick the historical figure they can find one pivotal point in their life and write a fictional story about what they think the person would have to go through at the time using the information they found. This will allow them to think a little bit outside of their world and get more engaged in history. Another activity that could be completed by the students is history can be defined as anything that happened yesterday. So a good activity to have children work on their own biography. They can write about a memorable moment in their life and make a story out of it.
